News from the Grossmont Healthcare District

The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD), a public agency that supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County, has granted $100,000 to Mountain Health & Community Services, Inc. (MHCS) to cover operating costs. MHCS annually serves about 6,000 patients – 35 percent of whom are uninsured – at its three Community Health Centers in Campo, Jacumba and Alpine, as well as a satellite clinic at Mountain Empire High School.

Judith Shaplin, MHCS CEO, recently told GHD board members that the grant was needed as a bridge to ease cash flow concerns while she waits for Medi-Cal reimbursement from 2001 through 2004. Poor cash flow has caused some layoffs and staff salaries have been reduced by 20 percent, she said.

The Grossmont Healthcare District, formed in 1952, serves as landlord of Grossmont Hospital on behalf of local taxpayers. The District is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent nearly 500,000 people residing within the District's 750 square miles in San Diego's East County.
