News from the Grossmont Healthcare District
The Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) board of directors has unanimously voted to approve a grant of $84,916 to Family Health Centers (FHC) of San Diego for new ultrasound equipment that will serve uninsured, underserved and low-income childbearing patients at FHC’s Grossmont Spring Valley clinic, 8788 Jamacha Road, Spring Valley. The new equipment will improve healthcare to more than 1,300 women over a year’s time, according to FHC officials. Ultrasound equipment uses high-frequency ultrasonic sound waves to create images of internal organs, and is commonly used to monitor a developing fetus in the womb.
In addition, GHD’s board said its grant will assist FHC with a new patient navigator program that will provide healthcare guidance to low-income East County residents. The program is designed to “navigate” new patients to overcome barriers in accessing healthcare and establish a medical home at either the Grossmont Spring Valley clinic or FHC’s Chase Avenue clinic at 1111 W. Chase Ave., El Cajon.
FHC of San Diego, a non-profit community clinic organization founded in 1970, offers a healthcare safety net at 28 locations throughout San Diego County, including 11 primary care clinics, three dental clinics, three mental health clinics and three mobile medical units that provide healthcare services at approximately 75 community sites. Roughly 65 percent of FHC’s patients are uninsured and 85 percent have incomes at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level.
Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency formed in 1952 to build and operate Grossmont Hospital, supports various health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County region, and serves as landlord of Sharp Grossmont Hospital, including ownership of the property and buildings on behalf of East County taxpayers. The District is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent nearly 500,000 people residing within the District's 750 square miles in San Diego's East County.
