News from the Grossmont Healthcare District
The Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library, located at 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, has announced its latest exhibition now on display through the end of April features 17 original paintings of endangered animals by award-winning wildlife artist Gloria Chadwick, a resident of El Cajon’s Dehesa Valley since 1975.
Chadwick's artwork, featuring oil, acrylic and chalk paintings, include a rhinoceros, snow leopard, California condor, grizzly bear, bison and other wildlife in open‑space landscapes, according to Kathy Quinn, library director. The exhibition is open to the public during regular library hours, which are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. Admission is free.
As part of the exhibition, free information is available about wildlife conservation. Chadwick has written an accompanying flyer, called “Conservation Is Up To You,” which includes websites of organizations that support saving endangered species and a suggested reading list. “My wish is to promote the protection of animals by giving local citizens the resource information so they can do whatever they can to save protected species and land,” said Chadwick, a member of the Artists for Conservation Foundation, an organization of international nature artists dedicated to wildlife, habitat conservation and preservation of the natural world.
A second‑generation San Diegan and East County resident since 1964, Chadwick has won numerous awards at juried art shows, including Best of 2007 at the Lancaster Museum/Art Gallery in Lancaster, Calif., and other recognition from the East County Art Association and at the Del Mar Fair. Her work also has appeared at the San Diego Natural History Museum and Heritage of the Americas Museum at Cuyamaca College in El Cajon. In 2003, in a special promotion sponsored by Starbucks, Chadwick’s rendering of pink flamingos was selected to adorn a commemorative, splash-proof drink tumbler, matching sleeve and gift card that supported the San Diego Zoo’s conservation efforts to help save endangered species. The items are considered highly collectable because they were available only in the Southern California market during the promotional period. Branching out from her wildlife paintings, she recently was selected by the El Cajon Historical Society to develop a design to repaint the Knox Hotel, which was built in 1876.
Chadwick, who works as a registered nurse, also serves as one of five members of the Grossmont Healthcare District (GHD) board of directors. GHD is a public agency that supports health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County. Chadwick has served on the board since 1998, when she became the first woman to be elected to the board in 22 years. In 2000, she became the first woman to serve as board president. In the November 2006 general election, Chadwick won re-election to another four year term after receiving the highest number of votes -- more than 66,500.
