Herrick Library Director to speak at San Carlos Branch Library on Jan. 25, 2012
Kathy Quinn, Library Director of the Dr. William C. Herrick Community Health Care Library in La Mesa, will speak on “Finding Health Information Online: Alternatives to Google” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2012, at the City of San Diego Library, San Carlos branch, 7265 Jackson Dr., San Diego. The public is invited to attend. Handouts on how to evaluate health websites and reliable sites to search will be provided.
The presentation is sponsored by the Friends of the San Carlos Branch Library, and is part of the Evening Speaker Program, held on the fourth Wednesday of the month. For more information about the presentation, call (619) 527-3430, or visit www.sancarlosfriendsofthelibrary.org
Quinn will share tips on how to find reliable, accurate and authoritative information on the Internet about your health and information about the Herrick Library, a comprehensive consumer health public library specializing in health research information, accessible both on-site and via the Internet. The Herrick Library, which opened in 2002, is operated by the Grossmont Healthcare District, a public agency that supports health-related community programs and services in San Diego’s East County. Located at Briercrest Park, 9001 Wakarusa St. in La Mesa, the Herrick Library provides free access to the latest consumer-level information in print and electronic formats. The library’s collection totals about 2,500 items.
Quinn has been the director of the Herrick Library since 2007. She received her Master’s degree in Library and Information Science in 1992 from Dominican University in the Chicago area. Kathy has provided research services in a variety of corporate libraries but has found her true calling in meeting the health information needs of the residents of the Grossmont Healthcare District.
The library is named after the late Dr. Herrick, who passed away in March 1998, while serving as a member of the District board of directors. He also served as director of the Grossmont Hospital Pathology Department (1961-1996), chair of the Continuing Medical Education Department (1963-1993), and a founder of El Cajon Valley Hospital (1967).
Regular library hours are from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesdays through Fridays, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. For more information about the library, phone (619) 825-5010 or visit www.herricklibrary.org.
The Grossmont Healthcare District, formed in 1952 to build and operate Grossmont Hospital, is governed by a five-member board of directors, each elected to four-year terms, who represent more than 500,000 people residing within the District's 750 square miles in the East County. The District serves as landlord of the hospital, including ownership of the property and buildings on behalf of East County taxpayers.
